Sophia Leonard was unfortunately forced to leave the pitch during Bournemouth’s first match of the campaign against Wimbledon, but the promising young wing back is optimistic about returning swiftly to play her part in the team’s push for promotion this season.
Bournemouth kicked off their term with a 1-0 triumph over their opponents from the capital, courtesy of Jenna Markham’s goal shortly after the interval.
Leonard was substituted after 25 minutes following an injury concern, though she remains optimistic that the problem is not serious and that she will be available again soon.
The 18-year-old explained to the Daily Echo that her foot simply twisted awkwardly following a challenge. She expressed hope that the injury would turn out to be minor, describing it merely as a twist and trusting that it should resolve without major complications.
Looking back on the match itself, Leonard acknowledged that the squad understood it would present a significant challenge, yet they were satisfied to emerge with all three points. She noted that the encounter was always likely to be physical and demanding, but the team demonstrated resilience in securing victory. Moving forward, the focus will be on building towards more steady and reliable performances throughout the campaign.
Leonard arrived at the south coast club through a dual registration arrangement with Arsenal during the latter part of the previous season, before that transfer became a permanent deal when the summer transfer window opened.
She faced her former employers during pre-season fixtures, describing the experience as unusual given her connections to both sets of personnel. Her former head coach had overseen her development previously, and she maintained relationships with numerous players from that environment. However, she emphasised that observing the growth and strength of her current team represented the most encouraging aspect. The final outcome, a 3-2 victory, naturally mattered most to her.
That positive result formed part of three pre-season successes, concluding with a narrow defeat against Watford as their competitive preparations drew to a close.

When questioned about potential achievements for the club this term, Leonard stated that securing promotion stood as the primary objective. She believes the team possesses the quality and mentality to accomplish this goal, provided they maintain their current trajectory and continue developing. Additional success in cup competitions would also represent a welcome bonus.
On a more personal level, the defender is simply determined to feature as frequently as possible. She aims to deliver her most effective season yet while contributing across multiple areas for the benefit of the team. Maximising starting appearances and accumulating playing time represent key targets, with goals and assists providing additional motivation. Her pre-season form gave her confidence heading into the campaign, and she is eager to return to action.
The youngster has also appreciated her working relationship with manager Helen Bleazard, noting that the coaching staff consistently prioritise player development. This supportive environment provides her with reassurance that she is heading in the right direction regarding her individual growth.
Her positional flexibility has proven advantageous, allowing her to accumulate more playing time across different roles. During summer friendlies, she sampled midfield duties, which she found valuable for enhancing her tactical awareness of the game. Her prior experience came at PGA level, where the tempo differed considerably from the faster pace encountered at this tier. This adaptation represents an important learning curve in her progression.
Regarding her optimal role, Leonard suggested that context plays a significant part. She gravitates towards creative, attacking football whenever circumstances allow. In more defensive contests, she feels comfortable operating centrally, though she derives particular enjoyment from operating out wide where she can express herself with more freedom.
