Bournemouth boss Marco Rose feels his team can take encouragement from their season-opening loss to Manchester City, despite the frustrating nature of the defeat.
The south coast club slipped to a 2-1 reverse at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, having led from Tavernier’s 26th-minute strike before the home side found two goals in the closing stages after the 84th minute to complete a remarkable turnaround.
The visitors produced an encouraging display, particularly before the interval, and Rose was largely satisfied with what he witnessed from his new charges.
Speaking about the opening period, Rose observed that his side had faced difficult phases in both halves, noting that at this venue it is impossible to completely avoid every challenge. He highlighted their ball-winning ability, successful counter-attacking moments, and a well-constructed team goal. He also pointed to a promising opportunity for Kluivert where the opposing goalkeeper produced an excellent stop, suggesting the match ultimately hinged on fine margins and small details.
Rose acknowledged that while the performance provided a solid platform to build upon, the lack of points remains the harsh reality of the situation. He recalled his previous experience at the same stadium when leading RB Leipzig 2-0 at half-time in Champions League action, only to suffer a 3-2 defeat, emphasizing that the contest is never finished at this level.
When asked about his half-time team talk and whether that prior experience affected his approach, Rose explained he had reminded his players that Manchester City possess exceptional quality, a formidable home ground, and numerous players with winning pedigree. He expressed satisfaction with his squad’s work rate, commitment, and the fundamental aspects of their play, adding that they would extract valuable lessons from the minor details that ultimately decided the outcome.
