Bournemouth kicked off their campaign with a crushing last-gasp loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Rose’s men held a one-goal advantage until six minutes from the end after Tavernier’s expertly finished first-half strike, with the hosts enjoying the bulk of possession but finding Bournemouth’s rearguard difficult to break down.
The second period followed a similar pattern as the visitors remained stubborn and limited the home side to few clear opportunities, yet Maresca’s team drew level when Guehi escaped his marker at the back post and headed in from a set-piece delivery.
Bournemouth were ultimately unable to hold on as the contest moved into stoppage time, when Gvardiol drove into the bottom corner, the strike being awarded by video technology despite an initial offside call.
Despite the defeat, the German coach could take several encouraging signs from the performance in Manchester.
Summer acquisition Antonio Silva was handed his first competitive start for the club, with Rose making a single alteration to the side that lost at Mainz the previous weekend.
Scott resumed his place in the eleven after serving a suspension, while Rose named a strong substitutes’ bench including Sanchez, Rodriguez and Adams.
Former Bournemouth player Semenyo featured in City’s line-up.
Following a tribute to former City manager Keegan, it was the home side who went close first, creating a promising opening inside the first five minutes.
Haaland escaped a challenge from Hill midway through the pitch and advanced into Bournemouth’s territory, finding Foden who clipped a clever pass for the advancing Lewis, but Petrovic rushed out to make a smart block.
O’Reilly headed over from the resulting set piece, before Truffert blocked a Foden volley and Bournemouth wasted a promising four-on-four situation when Evanilson failed to locate Tavernier.
City passed up a clear opportunity when O’Reilly reached the left byline and delivered a floated cross that found the unmarked Haaland six yards out, yet the normally reliable striker failed to capitalise and the ball rolled to safety.
The visitors crafted their first meaningful attack quarter of an hour in when Rayan raced towards goal from a wide position, but Donnarumma read it well and kept the effort out.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 26th minute.
The goal came from intricate play as Smith looked to pick out Rayan with a long ball from right-back, the Brazilian youngster drew Khusanov out of position leaving Evanilson free on the right flank.
Rayan located his fellow countryman and Evanilson delivered an ideal driven cross to the back post where Tavernier arrived to fire home first time.
Silva blocked a Haaland strike from the edge of the area before Petrovic produced a strong-handed save to push away the Norwegian’s header from a Guehi delivery.
Kluivert collected the ball cleanly from the subsequent set piece and found Tavernier with a precise square pass, but the Englishman’s effort drifted narrowly past the far post.
Shortly after, the visitors created another promising opening as Rayan picked out Kluivert on the left flank and he aimed for the far bottom corner, only for Donnarumma to match the effort.
City attempted to turn the screw before half-time but it was the visitors who carried their advantage into the interval.
The hosts went close to an equaliser six minutes after the restart when Guehi directed a free header past the far post from a corner when it appeared easier to score.
Maresca’s team controlled the ball during the early exchanges of the second half but failed to manufacture any clear opportunities beyond the Guehi miss.
City’s next sight of goal arrived in the 67th minute when Petrovic saved well from a Semenyo strike as he attempted to power home after a wayward pass to Rayan Cherki bounced back to him at a wide angle on the left.
Foden fired an effort from distance that deflected wide, before Haaland skewed over the bar while falling backwards off balance when found inside the penalty area.
Haaland threatened again when he was picked out in the box by Guehi’s cutback from the right, but Petrovic gathered at the second attempt.
Rose introduced Adams, Toth and Jebbison with a quarter of an hour remaining, replacing Cook, Kluivert and Evanilson.
Jebbison came close to scoring within moments of entering the field when he flicked on a Tavernier free kick that Donnarumma pushed behind.
City drew level in the 84th minute as Guehi escaped his man in the box from a corner and headed past Petrovic.
Gannon-Doak replaced Rayan before City moved ahead as the match entered three added minutes.
Rayan Cherki slipped through for Gvardiol and he found the bottom corner with the finish, and despite the assistant raising the flag for offside, the goal stood after review.
Bournemouth were unable to fashion a late opportunity to restore parity and their 2026/27 Premier League season began with a devastating late reverse.
